Communication: It’s been part of the cutting edge of every significant Christian movement known throughout history.
Be it word of mouth, stick drawings in the sand, or the printed page; Christian movements have used the communication tools of the day to effectively impact their culture.
Today communication is called social networking, and its gone global! I can tweet on my twitter and my friend in Australia can “hear me” in a matter of seconds.
I found an interesting article in Time on how some churches are using twitter to boost their own members and reach people far from God. See Twittering in Church, With the Pastor’s Okay
This got me thinking: What would a special twitter Sunday look like in YOUR church? Seriously, I want to know!
If you want your church to reach more people then terms like tweet, twitter, and facebook need to be part of your vocabulary. It’s missionary 101: If you plan to reach the culture you must first speak their language.
Social networking has rapidly integrated into the culture. To ignore this is to add another layer to the increasing perception of irrelevance held by those outside the church.
Can of worms you say? Go ahead – Bring it!

What would a special Twitter day at church look like? Being in charge of the worship service and setting the spiritual atmosphere puts me right in the cross hairs of this idea!
There are multiple ways to use this. Here are a few thoughts:
I might make this similar to a concert of prayer approach… I would have small packages of music and intersperse between them opportunities to tweet verses (or partial verses), expressions of praise to God, confessions of our need for God, how we are thankful and requests we lift to God (Adoration Confession Thanksgiving Supplication format).
How about “build a message” where the Pastor starts with a passage and begins to speak on that passage. As a question is tweeted he addresses the question and moves on till another tweet. Given a time limit of 30 minutes to do this in. Might it flop? Maybe, but you’ll never know till the light goes on.
What about giving the old “singspiration” a lift?! Tweeting songs (as in they pick a song) and verses and a tweeted testimony?
This all sounds exciting and fresh. I hope to toss these ideas at my Senior Pastor to see if they stick! I know that for my congregation it will be an out of the comfort zone experience. But, hey, you’ll never walk on water until you get out of the boat!

I think it would be fun to integrate twitter into a worship service. However, I cannot imagine my church being okay with it. Maybe I’m at the wrong church…hmmm.
